When the Panch phoron team was invited to try "Home Flavours", I thought we were visiting yet another newly opened restaurant. Lately I've been going out a lot, visiting new eateries, meeting new foodies, trying out new foods. But this one was somewhat different.
Home Flavour, Salt Lake

On checking out their Zomato page I found no photo of the decor/interiors. That's because it is not a restaurant. It is, most probably the first of its kind outlet providing delicious, hygienic home styled vegetarian food in thali system, that too in home delivery & take-away model. So you don't get a place to 'sit & eat'. What you get is literally 'ghar ka khana' away from your 'ghar' cooked under supervision of not some chef but master chefs in our home front, familiar to us as mom/chaachi/daadi. So definitely this is the 'go to place' for people living in and around Salt Lake & Rajarhat for ordering food.
On arriving, we were greeted by the owner Mr. Vikas Verma. We were offered Cold drinks & Cold Coffee.
We came to know that apart from the Rs 59/79/99/149 thali meals presently offered, they are looking forward to introducing Pav Bhaaji & Biryanis. We were to try out these particular dishes before they were to be formally introduced.
The dishes we tasted were regular & special Paav Bhaaji, Dum & Shahi Biryani.
The soft Paavs were lightly fried with butter as usual with pinch of seasoning in between the layers. They come same for both the variants of the dish. The two variants of bhaaji weren't much different, & I mean in a good way. Both were perfectly cooked with the mashed veggies. The special variant had dollops of butter added along with kashewnuts. Both tasted great as they melted in the mouth, just that if you are not that fond of the extra rich food skip the special bhaaji.
Coming to the Biryanis, as I've said earlier, I'm not really a big fan of vegetarian foods. Once in a while a occasional bite or two, I don't mind. But Veg Biryani? are you kidding me? Seems they weren't kidding! rather they were excelling at it.
Two variants were offered. A simple Dum version & a spicier Shahi one.
The Dum Biryani is cooked with small pieces of aloo (unlike the large pieces generally found in Kolkata style Biryani) Although the rice was well cooked & all, It looked more like veg pulao with dum aloo & gajar. It seems if youtake away the spices from Biryani to make it healthier, it no more remains Biryani. But that's strictly my opinion, order it if you are looking for a simple one dish meal.
The Shahi Biryani, as the name suggests, is the special variant. In addition to the standard aloo, this one has added chunks of paneer & gobi along with whole onions all cooked well & juicy. Tastewise this one was superior. The spices were not overwhelming, and in the right proportions to appeal to the tastebuds. The Biryanis were served along with creamy whipped curd which was a fine replacement for the standard raita. However having some variations of raita like pineapple or mixed won't hurt.
We ended the whole meal on a sweet note of rosogollas. I am not sure whether that's part of standard menu or keeps changing as per availability,so remember to ask when ordering.
Please note, the food is freshly prepared upon receiving the order, & then sent out for delivery. So try to place your order around 1.5-2 hours before you want to have your meal. That way you won't be disappointed for a late delivery & get the great tasting food just at the right time.
Thanks Mr. Vikas for the great food, not to mention the unique initiative of offering home-made food to all who are craving for it away from home, & thanks to team Panch Phoron for this great food tasting session.
happy eating,
ciao,
Deep
