Well that's because they weren't inside a plane at all. Balaram Mullick & Radharaman Mullick is a household name thanks to all the radio commercials they air. Even right now when I'm typing the name, the exact tone from the advertisement is ringing in my ears :D. However it's not only the advertising that has made them a popular outlet among the sweetmeat shops in Kolkata (& outside, in US even). It's one of the oldest sweet shops in Kolkata. Generally when we talk of heritage shops they are mostly located in north Kolkata. South Kolkata is considered much younger & surely lacks at least in the numbers of heritage eateries. Not in quality though. Balaram Mullick, Bhowanipur boasts of serving mouth wateringly delicious selection of sweets since 1885. In recent times they have opened branches all throughout Kolkata & even planning to expand overseas.

Does Au Bon Pain require any introduction? Surely not. A well known international cafe bakery chain, it did get itself entangled into some controversy as this particular outlet was replacing 'music world' an iconic destination for the city's music lovers. However the hatred died out soon, & Au Bon Pain established itself as a sought after destination for the Park Street crowd looking for a break from all the hustle bustle of the pub's & restaurants around.

What is the single food item we love the most? A dish that can be had on its own? A dish which doesn't require a starter, side dish or a dessert ? A dish which doesn't require even an introduction? Well, that has to be either a pizza or a biryani. Though to be honest both are best enjoyed with a glass of carbonated drinks, yet for me both are essentially a on dish meal & somehow the biryani gets a bit more preference when I am looking for a simple dinner.

Chinese is one of the cuisines which any Kolkatan swears by whenever it comes to eating out. & Why not? This is the place which gave birth to the so called 'Indianised Chinese' dishes which in reality is a variation of Hakka Cuisine , when Chinese seasoning & cooking techniques were adapted to suit the Indian palette with introduction of more vegetarian items compared to the true blue Chinese dishes.

This was the second stop on our itinerary for the Vedic Village Bloggers' meet organised by the team of Thinquisitive. Difficulty in reaching the venue i.e. The Vedic Village aside, which can be found in my earlier post about the place, this is the restaurant which hosted our sunday brunch. A multi cuisine restaurant which serves Indian, Oriental & Continental fare throughout the fare, the best time to visit this is around 12-3 in a Sunday to attend their Sunday Brunch which is a gastronomic carnival to say the least.

Vedic Village, the spa resort is well known for its unique combination of a three star luxury resort & an ayurvedic medical spa. Though a perfect weekend gateway from the hustle bustle of the city, it's quite an uncommon venue for a food bloggers' meet. However the uncommon was materialised when the team of Thinquisitive i.e. Vaibhab, Aishwarya & Ishita arranged for the third bloggers' meet to take place there. Initially a bit sceptical about attending a meet so far away from Kolkata, I gave into the excitement since the name Vedic Village itself was quite tempting.

Fikar not Foodies is a small restaurant near CA island, Salt Lake. Quite easy to reach from CC1, recently attended a bloggers' meet cum food tasting session here as part of PanchPhoron. The restaurant looks not so much of a looker from outside. A bright glosign has the name on it, beside it is the kitchen & takeaway counter. The outlet itself seats around 24 people.

Even a few years back eating out in Kolkata meant hitting the age old joints located in park street, ordering from the same old menu & reluctantly taking a yellow ambassador to return home (20 rs extra if you stayed beyond tollygunge, god save your home was in garia). It was a nightmare if you hit tangra, or park circus for some Chinese or biryani.

There was a time when the chitchats & addas used to take place at the para'r roak/ some restaurant 'cabins' munching on some 'aat anaar dalmut' while sipping from a 'maatir bharer chaa'. That's quite a thing of the past now. In fact so distant that many from the younger generations don't have a clue so as to what 'roak/cabins' mean.

'Idli Dosa Utthapam, ranna te ami uttamam' is the song most South Indian Restaurant try to shout at the top of their voice praising their dishes & authentic tastes. However they seldom get that right to the t. Sometimes the dosa is soggy, sometimes the idlis are hard. Sometimes they even mess up the sambar or coconut chutney. I being a lover of South Indian delicacies, remain super conscious whenever trying out new South Indian restaurants.
